Home Reno Rebate - Get $5,000 Back

Planning renovations or upgrades to your home in the near future? With the Home Reno Rebate from Union Gas, in partnership with the Government of Ontario and Save on Energy, you could be eligible for up to $5,000 in renovation rebates plus additional electric appliance rebates.

Basement Insulation 1, 2, 3

$1,250  For adding at least R23 to 100% of basement
 $750  For adding at least R12 to 100% of basement
 $1,000  For adding at least R23 to 100% of crawl space wall
 $500  For adding at least R10 to 100% of crawl space wall
 $500  For adding at least R24 to 100% of floor above crawl space

Exterior Wall Insulation 1

$1,750 Add at least R9 for 100% of building to achieve a minimum of R12.
$1,250  Add at least R3.8 for 100% of building to achieve a minimum of R12.

Attic Insulation 4

$500 For increasing attic insulation to at least R50 from R12 or less.
$250  For increasing attic insulation to at least R50 from R13 to R25.
$500  For increasing cathedral/flat roof insulation by at least R14.

Air Sealing

$150 Achieve 10% or more above base target
$100  Achieve base target

 

Window/Door/Skylight 5

$80 For each window, door or skylight replaced with ENERGY STAR Zone 2 or 3 qualified model.

 

 

Customers who complete more than two measures also qualify for a $250 rebate for each additional measure installed- up to a maximum of $5,000 rebate!

(1) The rebate is prorated based on the percentage of wall area insulated and does not include walls between individual units. For a semi-detached, rebates are 75 percent of the amounts shown.
(2) When both a basement and crawl space are present, all applicable grants are pro-rated to a maximum of $1,250 based on the total wall area.
(3) Can qualify for either crawl space wall or floor above crawl space rebate.
(4) Insulate a minimum of 20% of the total ceiling area. When the roof consists of more than one type and/or sections (i.e., any combination of attic, cathedral ceiling and flat roof), rebates are pro-rated based on the total ceiling area percentages upgraded. The rebate for any combination of attic, cathedral ceiling and flat roof cannot exceed $500.
(5)$80 rebate per rough opening. Bay window considered one rough opening.

Furnace/Boiler 1 

$1,000 For replacing a

  • 94% or less AFUE natural gas, propane, or oil furnace, or;
  • 89% or less AFUE natural gas, propane, or oil boiler, or;

With a

  • 95% or higher AFUE condensing natural gas, propane, or oil furnace
  • 90% or higher AFUE condensing natural gas, propane, or oil boiler

Note: The combi system qualifies as a boiler and is eligible for the rebate 3

Your home’s primary heating source must be natural gas, propane, oil furnace/boiler, or wood stove. Homes converting from one fuel source to another can participate in program. However, converting from/to electrically heated homes is not eligible.  

 $250 Gas Furnace with Electrically Commutated Motor (ECM)

Note: This is an additional rebate and is not limited by the $5,000 maximum; it is available for all homes regardless of the heating source. This rebate is only eligible with a new gas furnace upgrade. 

Wood Burning System

$750 For replacing a wood-burning system or appliance with one of the following:

  • An indoor wood-burning appliance certified to either CAN/CSA-B415.1 or the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 40 CFR Part 60 wood-burning appliance standard. Appliances exempt from EPA testing are not eligible unless they are B415.1-M92 certified.
  • An indoor pellet-burning appliance (includes stoves, furnaces and boilers that burn wood, corn, grain or cherry pits).
  • An indoor masonry heater.

Or

For replacing a solid fuel-fired outdoor boiler with an outdoor wood-burning appliance certified to either CAN/CSA-B415.1 or United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Outdoor Wood-fired Hydronic Heater (OWHH Method 28) Program (Phase 1 and 2). The capacity of the new equipment must be equal to or smaller than the capacity of the boiler being replaced.

Note: Your home’s primary heating source needs to be a wood burning system to qualify.

Water Heater 2

$500
  • For replacing your water heater with 0.80 EF or higher tanked natural gas or propane water heater or;
  • For replacing your water heater with 0.82 EF or higher tankless natural gas or propane water heater

Note: The combo system qualifies as a water heater and is eligible for the rebate 4

Switching to/from electric water heater does not qualify for the rebate. Water heater rebates are not available for electrically heated homes. 

 

Electric Air Source Heat Pump-  Electrically Heated Homes Only 6

ALL electrically heated homes installing ASHP MUST meet the following criteria:

  • Serves as a primary heat source
  • ENERGY STAR certified and minimum efficiency rating of EER 12.5/SEER 15/HSPF 8.5

CC ASHP – Ductless:

    • Must meet NEEP’s Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump Specification (NEEP, 2017 or more recent) and;
    • Have a COP at -15°C(5°F) greater than 2.0 at a max capacity operation and;
    • Maintain a max capacity at -15°C (5°F) that is greater than or equal to 55% of maximum capacity at 8.3°C (47°F)

CC ASHP Ducted:

    • Must meet NEEP’s Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump Specification (NEEP, 2017 or more recent)

 

Additional Rebates

These measures do not qualify as the two renovations required to participate in the program or the bonus rebate. They are additional rebates not limited by the $5,000 maximum. 

Electric Air Source Heat Pump- All Except Electrically Heated Homes 5

$500 Air Source Heat Pump must be:

  • ENERGY STAR certified, and
  • Minimum efficiency rating of EER 12.5/SEER 15/HSPF 8.5

Cooling

$400 ENERGY STAR® qualified central air conditioning system SEER 15 and EER 12.5

Note: This is an additional rebate and is not limited by the $5,000 maximum. This rebate is available for all homes regardless of heating source. 

Customers who complete more than two measures also qualify for a $250 rebate for each additional measure installed- up to a maximum of $5,000 rebate!

(1) Maximum one eligible heating system rebate per meter (with the exception of installing ASHP for non-electrically heated homes).
(2) Maximum one water heater rebate per home.
(3,4) A combi or combo system CANNOT qualify for both the space heating boiler rebate and the domestic hot water rebate; it counts as one measure. However, replacing a combi or combo system with a space heating boiler and domestic water heater counts as two measures and qualifies for both rebates.
(5) Maximum one ASHP rebate per home. Must be a secondary heating system; households converting to electric are not eligible for the rebate. ASHP does not count as a measure. Rebate does not count towards the $5,000 maximum. Rebate can be combined with another heating equipment.
(6) Rebate counts towards the $5,000 maximum. AHSP counts as a measure. Can’t be combined with another heating equipment upgrade.

Appliance rebates are available for all homes regardless of heating source.  Please note that in order to qualify for appliance rebates:

  • Appliances must be 15 years or older
  • Must replace existing appliance (buying a new appliance without retiring an existing one doesn’t qualify)
  • Old appliance must be removed from the house
